Not every project is a full kitchen refit or wall-to-wall wardrobes. Often it’s the fitted details that make a room feel finished and properly thought through.
These recent built-in shelving and kitchen joinery projects were completed for homes in and around Harrogate, each designed to solve practical storage and layout issues rather than just fill a wall.

Built-in shelving with cabinet base
This shelving unit was made to fit the room exactly. Ceiling height, wall width and proportions were all measured so it sits comfortably in the space.
The problem here was balance. The room needed storage, but didn’t want to feel heavy.
Open shelving keeps it light. The cupboards below deal with everyday clutter. No wasted gaps. No filler panels. Just storage that fits properly.
When built-in shelving is made to measure, it becomes part of the room rather than something added afterwards.
Similar built-in storage projects can be adapted for living rooms, studies or bedrooms.

Solid timber kitchen shelving
These kitchen shelves were built from solid timber and fixed with black brackets. Simple, practical and strong.
The issue in this kitchen was wall space. The client wanted storage without adding more wall cabinets and making the room feel boxed in.
Open shelving works well when it’s proportioned properly. Shelf thickness, spacing and fixings all matter. Done correctly, shelves won’t sag and won’t look temporary.
It gives usable storage while keeping the room open.

Bespoke cooker hood surround
Extractors are usually just boxed in. In this Harrogate kitchen, we built a proper surround to give the cooker some presence and tie it in with the rest of the joinery.
The challenge was scale. Too large and it dominates the room. Too small and it looks unfinished.
By shaping the supports and adding moulding detail, the extractor becomes part of the design rather than something hidden away. I also design and build full bespoke kitchens where these kinds of details are planned from the start.
Built-in bench seating with hidden storage
This fitted bench seat was built for the home in Hampsthwaite, just outside Harrogate, to make better use of an awkward corner.
The room needed proper seating and extra storage. Instead of adding loose furniture, we built a made-to-measure corner bench with lift-up lids.
The panelled finish keeps it clean and in keeping with the space. Inside, there’s practical storage that would otherwise have been wasted.
Built-in bench seating works well in kitchens and family spaces where storage and seating need to work together. Measured for the room. Built properly. Made to last.
Why built-in joinery makes a difference
Off-the-shelf units are built to standard sizes. Homes aren’t.
That’s why made-to-measure joinery works. It fits the exact space. It solves specific storage problems. And it looks intentional.
Whether it’s shelving, fitted storage or kitchen features, the aim is the same. Build it properly. Fit it properly. Make it last.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of built-in shelving?
Built-in shelving is made to fit the exact dimensions of your room. That means no wasted space, no awkward gaps and a cleaner overall finish compared to freestanding furniture.
Is bespoke kitchen joinery worth it?
For many homeowners, yes. Bespoke joinery allows you to design around your layout, appliances and storage needs rather than adjusting to standard cabinet sizes. It usually results in better use of space and a more cohesive finish.
Do you make custom shelving in Harrogate?
Yes. All shelving and fitted joinery is made to measure and installed in Harrogate and surrounding areas.
How long does built-in joinery take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the project. Smaller shelving or feature pieces can be completed relatively quickly, while larger fitted units require more workshop time and careful installation.
